Blues & Beyond #108: The Mississippi Marvel, Jandek, Gaye Adegbalola

From WXPN | Part of the Blues & Beyond series | 00:59:00

 Credit:
Music from artists who are concealing their identites: The Mississippi Marvel and Jandek. Plus a provocative new album from Gaye Adegbalola.

It seems almost counter-intuitive, and just plain senseless, for musicians trying to make it in the music biz to conceal their identities... but we have two of them on this show. The Mississippi Marvel doesn't want the people in his conservative church to know he is singing the blues. So, his name isn't disclosed. He appeared on stage recently in Clarksdale MS behind a screen. His music is rough-hewn country blues. Perhaps the idea for his name came from "The Masked Marvel" which was used as an alias by Charley Patton in 1929 for his second record. We have a new reissue of that record from Pristine Audio, the company that is getting better sound than ever before out of old 78 rpm records. Patton's label, Paramount Records, made a contest out of guessing his identity, but there's no such deal going with The Mississippi Marvel. Jandek has made a career out of being mysterious, recording off-center blues-like and folk-like music for thirty years-- refusing interviews and until recently never appearing in public. Now, he has played some un-announced gigs. We'll hear a track from a live Jandek album on this show. We also check out Gaye Adegbalola's album "Gaye Without Shame." She's a member of Saffire The Uppity Blueswomen (she wrote their best-known song "Middle Age Blues Boogie") who also has a solo career. This album examines the issues surrounding gay rights and the experience of being gay more than any blues album before it has. Plus: new music from the irrepressible Super Chikan, and a new song from Hal Ketchum, in this diverse hour of music! Hide full description
