The native Mapuche people in Southern Chile and Argentina date back thousands of years. In 2004, the Indigenous people in Southern Argentina say the Italian Clothing company Benetton is the newest conquistador in hundreds of years of land struggle. The Carlo Benetton family is the largest landholder in Argentina, owning 2.2 million acres in the resource rich region of Patagonia. 10 percent of the company's wool production comes from the property. AMB: camaruco early light and horns
The Mapuche have gathered in southern argentina for religious ceremonies like this one for thousands of years. In what is called a camaruco, the natives of Patagonia wake up before dawn to perform rituals. Men and women chant and play instruments, while others circle around an altar of sticks and barrels.
UP chanting ambience
For several days they camp outside on a clearing below the regions steep mountains. The rituals worship the sun, which they believe will give them strength in the newest struggle that faces them.

Integral to the gatherings are discussions around fires while siping yerba mate and feasting on fire roasted horse meat. The lonko, or ceremonial leader joins them with his corn drink, and tells stories of his peoples eviction by white settlers.

Review of The Mapuche People Face a Land Giant
There's an interesting story here and some lovely elements but they don't come through very well. The lead is buried and without the information on the piece profile page, I'm afraid I'm lost. With some restructuring this could be a nice piece about the dislocation of a community by a global brand that advertises diversity -- the True Colors of Benetton.
