A Jethro Tull Christmas With Ian Anderson
From: Douglas Grant
Length: 00:58:56
Piece Description
Multi-instrumental musician, prolific writer, distinctive singer and conspicuous flutist Ian Anderson of the British band Jethro Tull shares colorful Christmas memories, and presents tracks from the "cynical and grumpy" Jethro Tull Christmas Album. Anderson talks about his relationship with the flute and relearning to play the instrument properly after three decades of recording and touring. Broadly classified at times as Progressive Rock, Jethro Tull's music spans many genres including Jazz, Folk, Classical and Blues, in ways that are as rich and brilliant as they are unique. This humorous and engaging one-hour special provides a definite counterpoise to more conventional holiday programming fare, and is well-suited to a wide age range, given Jethro Tull's lengthy and illustrious history which began in the 1960's. The band has produced 30 albums and performed more than 2500 concerts in 40 countries. Engineer and Producer Douglas Grant has also included original blends of a few of the band's recordings which Tull fans may find interesting. The program is newscast compatible, with optional content filling the hh:01-hh:06 slot; there is also a 60sec bed at 28min past the hour for those needing the hole. For full T&C, see the Information for Stations section. Attachments: 30 second promo edit with bed, and Ian Santa program graphics.

Review of A Jethro Tull Christmas With Ian AndersonLooking for an 'out of the ordinary last second' Christmas special? This is the one, especially for stations who program rock and related genres of music. Excellent production values and rock solid (pun intended) musical recordings. Ian Anderson has a great voice, a stylish delivery and he sounds honest, warm, funny and personal. Good balance between music and Ian's conversations. Hear a great version of 'Moondance' and find out who motivated Ian to relearn flute technique. Laugh at good natured references to Eric Clapton and "slightly grumpy" Christmas music. I liked this a lot. |

Review of A Jethro Tull Christmas With Ian AndersonIan Anderson, that flute toting musical maniac from the 60's, gives us a festive line up of songs for the season. His naratives are all wonderful leadins to his wonderful style of music. He provides both humorous and anecdotal shorts that add another layer to his music and ones perspective of the holidays. If you enjoy Jethro Tull or are looking for a wonderful departure from the normal Christmas stuff, you'll love this program. |

* * * * * * Six stars!
As a diehard Tull Fan of nearly thirty years, I couldn't rate this below five stars, now, could I? So how about six?
The music, of course, is familiar to me, as I own all thirty-some of the Tull Studio albums plus a few of the box sets and compilations.
I often listen to Tull's "Christmas Album" around this time of year as a a matter of personal tradition, and as an antidote to a lot of the smarmy, overplayed holiday fare on the airwaves. This time, it was a treat to hear Ian's dialogue and some backstory as well. You can bet I'll give it another two or three listens before the holiday season ends. Thanks!
